Georgia to fine noisy cars

New rules come into force on January 1

From January 1, 2026, drivers in Georgia will be required to comply with established noise standards for cars. In populated areas at night - from 23:00 to 08:00 - the maximum permissible level should not exceed 80 decibels. The control is assigned to the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs using certified portable devices.

A fine is provided for the violation: the first time - 100 lari ($38), repeatedly - 200 lari ($75), and 300 lari ($111) for the next violation. The procedure will be approved by a separate order of the Minister of Internal Affairs.

Earlier attempts to combat loud cars have already been made: a law on punishing drivers for exceeding noise was adopted in the fall of 2023, and from July 2025, sanctions for unauthorized tuning of exhaust systems were tightened. Then the mass evacuation of cars caused a protest from car owners and a review of measures.
