The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has explained the procedures that must be followed to restore a driver's license under the current amnesty. This refers to citizens who were deprived of their rights before December 16, 2025 for exhausting penalty points, drunk driving, leaving the scene of an accident, or a number of other violations. In total, there are about 35,500 such drivers.
From January 1, 2026, approximately 780 drivers who were deprived of their licenses due to exhaustion of the point limit will automatically have their rights restored - they will also be credited with 100 new points. Another approximately 11,000 people will be able to get their rights back after full payment of their fine debts. At the same time, about 3,500 people recognized as drug addicts are not subject to automatic recovery: they will need a conclusion from the state forensic medical examination with a dynamic analysis for drugs.
A separate procedure is provided for approximately 20,000 drivers who have been deprived of their rights for driving under the influence of alcohol or for leaving the scene of an accident. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is obliged to publish information on its official website by February 1, 2026 on the release of each such person from sanctions - the publication itself will mean the restoration of the right to drive. The amnesty does not apply to serious drug crimes and a number of articles of the Criminal Code, and also cancels the possibility of early return of rights for repeated violations - in such cases, more stringent measures will be applied.
