A protest was held in the center of Rustavi by auto importers against the planned ban on the import of cars older than six years. Participants gathered at the car market, fearing that the new rules could lead to the closure of up to 30% of companies and an increase in car prices, while the stated goal of the authorities – improving the environment – may remain unrealized. The participants intend to send an appeal to the government with compromise proposals and hope for a dialogue.
According to the government's decision, from April 1, 2026, the import, initial and temporary registration of M1 category passenger cars older than six years will be prohibited. Exceptions are provided for cars whose transportation began before this date, as well as for already imported cars. The restrictions do not apply to re-export, transit and electric vehicles.
The authorities explain the measures by the need to improve the environmental situation, increase road safety and curb the rapid growth of the car fleet. As of the end of 2025, almost 1.9 million cars are registered in Georgia, of which more than 80% are over ten years old. Last year, imports increased by 11.5%, and re-exports by 16%, which increases pressure on the market and the arguments of auto importers.
