In 2026, the higher education system of Georgia will undergo a major transformation. Minister of Education Givi Mikanadze announced that the government intends to completely revise the approach to the selection of teachers, update curricula and modernize the infrastructure of universities. The main goal of the reforms is to make education in the country competitive with foreign universities and reduce the outflow of young specialists abroad.
The reforms will start from the beginning of the year and will cover all key aspects: new standards for teachers, updated curricula and improved conditions for students. According to the minister, this will allow graduates of Georgian universities to receive knowledge and skills comparable to the best foreign programs, and the regions will receive modern educational support.
In addition, starting from January 1, 2026, all students of state universities will study completely free of charge. Givi Mikanadze stressed that Georgia is becoming one of the few countries in the world with completely free higher education, and the new system creates conditions for quality and affordable education for all.
