The Georgian authorities have announced plans to modernize another section of the Mtskheta–Stepantsminda–Lars highway, leading to the border with Russia and known as the Georgian Military Road. This concerns a 27 km section from Tsitsamuri to Jinvali, which will be completely reconstructed and transformed into a modern four-lane highway as part of the new project.
During the work on this section, it is planned to build 16 bridges, which will significantly increase the safety and capacity of the road. After the modernization is completed, the estimated speed will reach 120 km/h, and the travel time will be reduced to approximately 15 minutes. The project documentation has already been submitted to the Department of Environmental Supervision, which is one of the mandatory steps before the start of construction.
In parallel, Georgia continues to implement another large-scale project on the Georgian Military Road — the construction of a 24-kilometer Kobi–Kvesheti section worth 1.2 billion lari, which is scheduled for completion in 2028. The country's longest 466-meter arched bridge is being built there, among other things. The Mtskheta–Stepantsminda–Lars highway remains the only land route connecting Georgia and Armenia with Russia, and the Upper Lars checkpoint is the only one on the Russian-Georgian border.
