Baku-Tbilisi-Kars historical railway being prepared for opening

Georgia expects to strengthen its transit role and invest $370 million in railways

The Georgian authorities have announced the imminent launch of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars international railway route. The grand opening of the line is expected to take place in the near future and will be a landmark event for the entire region, according to Georgian Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili.

According to her, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project is of strategic importance not only for Georgia, but also for Azerbaijan and Turkey, strengthening transport and economic ties between the countries. The Minister stressed that this is a historical railway line, which should play a key role in the development of regional logistics routes.

In parallel, Georgia intends to strengthen its transit function. In the coming years, it is planned to invest about 1 billion GEL, or $370 million, in the development of the Georgian Railways company. Earlier, Tbilisi reported that by the beginning of 2026, the capacity of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route could be increased by 3 times.
