Tbilisi authorities announce project to build third metro line

Work will begin to be financed from 2026, the implementation period is seven years

A new metro line project has been presented in Tbilisi: an 8.5 km route will connect Didube and Rustaveli via Saburtalo and Vake.

The new line will be the third in the capital's network and will for the first time provide a metro for residents of Vake, which has been without underground transport for many years. The project includes seven stations: Didube 2, Gamopena, Medical University 2, Central Park, Vake Park, Vake and Rustaveli 2.

The 8.5 km route creates an alternative to the single interchange station "Vokzalnaya Square", where passenger flows are concentrated today. City authorities point out that the new line should reduce the load on this point and improve traffic distribution in the center.

Funding will start in 2026: up to $40 million will be allocated for preparatory and construction work in the first year. In 2027 and 2028, the budget will be increased to $70 million annually. According to the mayor's office, the project will take seven years to implement, including engineering work, station construction and line launch.
