Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze has announced the temporary suspension of the construction of the above-ground metro, which has not yet begun. Instead, priority will be given to expanding existing metro lines, primarily the "Teatr Akhmeteli" and "Varketili" terminal stations.
The elevated metro project was initiated back in 2018, after Kaladze came to the post of mayor, and included a feasibility study with the involvement of European companies. Studies have shown that its implementation would require about 300 million euros, which cast doubt on the feasibility of large expenditures.
It is noted that if the elevated metro were to be built now, it would cause criticism about expenses diverting funds from more pressing needs of the city's transport network.
Kaladze emphasized that extending the first metro line by one station from each end will reduce congestion and better distribute passenger traffic.
