Georgia Allocates 4.8 Million Lari for Restoration of Historic "Kukushka" Narrow-Gauge Railway

The project will cover the Borjomi-Bakuriani stations and aims to restore their tourism potential

The Borjomi-Bakuriani narrow-gauge railway is preparing for a large-scale restoration: "Georgian Railway" company has announced a tender for 4.8 million Lari to restore the historic stations and infrastructure of the route. The works will affect objects with cultural heritage status.

The project envisages a "design-build" format, where the contractor simultaneously develops documentation and performs restoration work. The list includes the stations of Bakuriani, Dabi, Tsemi, Libani, and Tsagveri, as well as passenger platforms and administrative buildings.

The restoration aims to preserve the historical appearance and restore damaged infrastructure elements. It also plans to modernize engineering systems, improve territories, and enhance conditions for passengers. After the completion of the works, the route should regain its tourist appeal, which has been declining since 2020 due to the poor condition of the stations.
