In the first quarter of 2026, Georgia significantly increased imports of Russian electricity — volumes rose 22.3 times compared with the same period last year. According to the National Statistics Service, purchases reached $12.9 million, setting a record level for first quarters over the past decade.
This figure nearly matched the 2016 maximum, when imports amounted to about $13.58 million, and approached the historical peak of late 2019, which exceeded $15.7 million. A sharp increase was also recorded in March: purchases totaled $2.3 million, almost 13 times more than a year earlier.
Overall, during the quarter Georgia imported $35.8 million worth of electricity. Russia became the main supplier, followed by Turkey with $12.9 million, Azerbaijan with $5.9 million, and Armenia with $4 million. This structure indicates strengthening regional energy interdependence amid fluctuations in domestic demand and seasonal factors.
