On April 1, 2026, a ban on the sale of a number of plastic products came into force in Georgia. The restrictions include disposable forks, knives, spoons, plates, straws, stirrers, as well as containers and cups made of expanded polystyrene and their lids. The import and production of these products were banned earlier - from January 1, now the restrictions have been extended to sales.
Additionally, rules have been introduced for public procurement: institutions are prohibited from purchasing plastic cups, containers and drinks in plastic bottles with a volume of up to 3 liters. An exception is made only for defense needs. Control over compliance with the rules is assigned to specialized departments, including environmental supervision and tax authorities.
Serious fines are provided for violation: 1000 GEL with confiscation of products, and in case of repeated violation - already 2000 GEL. At the same time, the ban does not apply to export: manufacturers can produce such products for foreign markets, but are obliged to notify the authorities in advance of production and supply plans.
