Georgia Changes Gas Balance: Imports from Russia Increased

Supplies from Azerbaijan Decreased

In 2025, the structure of Georgia's gas imports changed significantly. According to the GNERC report, natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan decreased by 1.6% and amounted to 2.27 billion cubic meters. At the same time, the main volume still comes from flexible contract schemes and swap supplies, while direct commercial imports amounted to 666 million cubic meters.

A separate note is made of the increase in supplies via the South Caucasus Pipeline – in 2025, they increased to 235 million cubic meters compared to 70 million cubic meters a year earlier. Despite this, Azerbaijan remains a key supplier, providing about 71.7% of the country's consumption. However, the role of another direction has simultaneously strengthened: gas imports from Russia increased by 12% and reached 886 million cubic meters.

As a result, Russia occupied about 27.9% of the market, while domestic production remains symbolic – approximately 0.4%. The total volume of gas consumption in the country amounted to 3.172 billion cubic meters, which confirms Georgia's almost complete import dependence – at the level of 99.6%. GNERC also notes that the limited capacity of the infrastructure in the Azerbaijani direction periodically requires additional supplies to cover peak demand.
