The Baku—Tbilisi—Kars railway project will be officially commissioned on June 2. This is evidenced by data from the State Procurement Agency and materials related to the preparation of the opening ceremony. High-ranking representatives of the participating countries – Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey – are expected to attend the event in Akhaltsikhe.
The route is considered a key element of regional transport infrastructure. Over the years of the project's implementation, stations, bridges, tunnels, terminals, and substations have been built, and approximately 235 km of new railway tracks have been laid. The total length of the line is 827 km, and its throughput capacity is estimated at about 5 million tons of cargo per year.
However, the actual utilization of the route remains low – less than 10% of its design capacity. Despite this, the participating countries expect that the official launch will stimulate cargo flows and strengthen the corridor's role as a strategic route between Europe and Asia. Infrastructure management will be carried out through the joint company BTKI Railways.
