Georgia Postpones Road Construction to Borders with Azerbaijan and Armenia

Tender canceled

The tender for the construction of 60 km of roads to the borders with Azerbaijan and Armenia has been canceled due to low competition among participants, Georgian authorities reported. The project was to receive funding from the European Investment Bank in the amount of 250 million euros and from the state budget.

The winner of the competition was planned to build the Rustavi-Tsiteli and Algeti-Sadakhlo highways, including 26 bridges and 11 interchanges. Work was scheduled to begin in 2025 and take about 2.5 years, but due to the cancellation of the tender, the project implementation timeline now remains uncertain.

The cancellation of the competition reflects the difficulties in attracting contractors for large-scale infrastructure projects and may delay the strategic connection of Georgia's transport networks with neighboring countries. Authorities promise to revise the terms and announce a new tender in the near future.
