At the Verkhny Lars border crossing on the North Ossetia side, a queue of approximately 2,500 heavy goods vehicles has formed, waiting to enter Georgia. According to regional authorities, about 2,200 vehicles have already been registered in the electronic accounting system, which is used to regulate traffic in this border section.
Despite the high capacity of the Zemo Larsi checkpoint — up to 700 trucks per day in each direction — in reality, less than 300 trucks pass through the point per day. The situation is complicated by the tourist season: a significant part of the lanes are used for passenger vehicles, and traffic intensity remains high. On normal days, 500–600 trucks enter North Ossetia, and 300–350 go towards Georgia.
To reduce the load, the authorities of North Ossetia are temporarily restricting the entry of freight transport and are not opening additional parking areas. At the same time, the construction of two new parking lots has been announced — for 1,000 trucks and 500 passenger cars. The electronic queue is already in operation and should simplify transit, but the problem of congestion on one of the key routes between Russia and Georgia remains acute.
