Georgia Prepares New End-of-Life Vehicle Recycling System

How to handle waste remains to be solved

Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Solomon Pavliashvili met with representatives of car importing companies. According to the Ministry, the discussion concerned the formation of a unified waste management system for end-of-life vehicles and the preparation of technical regulations that will establish requirements for the logistics, sorting and processing of such waste.

Currently, there are four technical regulations in the country: they define the procedure for collecting and processing tires, motor oils, batteries and electronic equipment. Documents regulating the handling of packaging materials and end-of-life vehicles have not yet been adopted.

Pavliashvili noted that close dialogue with the industry business is considered a fundamental condition for developing working solutions. He stressed that before the approval of the new technical regulation, all provisions will be agreed with market participants so that the future system is feasible and convenient for importers.

The Ministry clarifies that the preparation of the document is aimed at introducing the principle of extended producer responsibility and establishing standards for the handling of old vehicle waste. The main task is to reduce the volume of such waste and ensure its subsequent use.

According to the Deputy Minister, a competent waste management system directly affects the state of the environment, and environmental responsibility remains an important part of business.
