Georgian Energy Exchange will temporarily suspend the operation of the day-ahead market. According to a government decree dated September 8, trading in this format will cease on October 1, 2026, and resume on July 1, 2027. Until then, the exchange will continue to operate under a transitional model, and then the day-ahead market should return to the schedule.
The reason for this was the almost complete lack of interest from participants. Irakli Galdava, head of the exchange, stated that registered companies hardly submitted any applications and no actual trading took place. At the same time, the exchange continued to spend resources on maintaining the platform, including the work of employees on weekends. According to published data, about 99.9% of all trading occurs in the "day-ahead" market.
The difference between the formats lies primarily in the time of concluding transactions. In the "day-ahead" market, electricity is sold today for delivery tomorrow, while the day-ahead market allows transactions to be concluded up to an hour before delivery. According to Galdava, the first option turned out to be more convenient for participants also from the point of view of pricing, since the day-ahead market requires greater involvement, and the auction model is not applied in it.
