At the initiative of the Tbilisi City Hall, together with "Georgian Railway", preparation of a study for the creation of an urban railway corridor has begun. An international tender has been announced for the selection of an executor in accordance with the procurement rules of the Asian Development Bank.
Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced that the deadline for submitting applications is July 13. According to him, the project is based on the capital's sustainable mobility plan and involves the use of existing railway infrastructure.
This refers to the potential integration of the urban network with directions connecting Tbilisi with Mtskheta, Rustavi, the international airport and eastern regions. If necessary, the construction of additional sections or bypass lines may also be considered.
At this stage, the project's task is to conduct a comprehensive technical and economic analysis with an assessment of environmental, social and financial factors. Based on the results of the study, the optimal model for the implementation of the future transport corridor will be determined.
The City Hall notes that the project is part of the city's long-term transport strategy and is being implemented with the support of the Asian Development Bank. The coordination of works will be carried out by the Tbilisi Transport and Urban Development Agency.
