Georgia's authorities have announced the launch of a project for a digital analogue of the national currency, the lari. The initiative is being implemented with the participation of one of the world's largest crypto companies, Tether, which will introduce a digital version of the currency called GELt.
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that cooperation with the company will become an important part of the country's economic ecosystem and will open up new opportunities for the development of financial technologies.
Tether, known as the issuer of the largest stablecoin USDT, is seen as a key player in the integration of traditional and digital financial systems. According to the authorities, the project can significantly reduce the costs of international transfers and accelerate the development of fintech infrastructure.
It is also noted that the company plans to expand its investment activity in Georgia, including educational and social projects, which is seen as a signal of increased interest from international investors in the country.
