Turkey plans a giant railway along the Black Sea - 513 km to the Georgian border

The new line is designed for trains with a speed of 250 km/h and will be able to carry up to 12 million passengers and 14 million tons of cargo per year

Turkey plans to build a 513 km high-speed railway line along the Black Sea coast — from Samsun to Sarp on the border with Georgia. The route will pass through Ordu, Giresun, Trabzon, Rize, and Artvin. According to Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, the train will be able to cover the entire journey in approximately 4.5 hours.

The project is designed for speeds of up to 250 km/h and includes the construction of 14 stations. Once launched, the new infrastructure will be able to serve up to 12 million passengers and transport up to 14 million tons of cargo annually. Due to the complex mountainous terrain along the coast, a large number of tunnels and viaducts will need to be built.

The project has already been included in Turkey's 2026 investment program for feasibility studies and preliminary design work. The new line will become part of the national railway network: Samsun will be connected to the Ankara — Kırıkkale — Çorum — Samsun route, and the future Erzurum — Trabzon line will provide connections to the country's inland regions. Through Trabzon and Rize, the railway will directly reach the Georgian border.
