Georgian Energy Exchange to Halt Day-Ahead Trading - Participants Chose "Day-Ahead" Market

Starting October 1, 2026, the day-ahead market will temporarily cease operations: almost all trading activity is concentrated in the more popular "day-ahead" format.

The Georgian Energy Exchange will temporarily suspend the operation of the day-ahead market. According to a government decree dated September 8, trading in this format will cease on October 1, 2026, and resume on July 1, 2027. Until then, the exchange will continue to operate under a transitional model, after which the day-ahead market is expected to return to the schedule.

The reason for this is the almost complete lack of interest from participants. The head of the exchange, Irakli Galdava, stated that registered companies hardly submitted any bids, and no actual trading took place. Meanwhile, the exchange continued to spend resources on maintaining the platform, including staff working on weekends. According to published data, about 99.9% of all trading occurs in the "day-ahead" market.

The difference between the formats lies primarily in the time of concluding deals. In the "day-ahead" market, electricity is sold today for delivery tomorrow, while the day-ahead market allows deals to be concluded up to an hour before delivery. According to Galdava, the first option proved more convenient for participants in terms of pricing, as the day-ahead market requires greater involvement, and the auction model is not applied in it.
