The National Bank of Georgia presented a concept for the development of financial markets, which should make the securities market more liquid and expand banks' and clients' access to risk hedging instruments. As part of the program, the five largest banks in the country – Bank of Georgia, TBC Bank, Liberty, TeraBank, and Basisbank – are transitioning to a unified Nasdaq Calypso treasury platform. It will cover the full cycle of operations and allow banks to more effectively manage currency, interest rate, and other financial risks.
The National Bank expects that infrastructure development and the emergence of new hedging instruments will accelerate market growth. Currently, its volume is estimated at several tens of billions of lari, and by 2030, the regulator intends to increase this figure at least fivefold, and under a favorable scenario, five to tenfold. The authorities also hope to attract international partners to Georgia and create new financial ties.
The project for implementing the treasury infrastructure is designed for two years. Currently, five banks are participating in it, but in the future, new financial organizations will be able to connect to the system. The National Bank emphasizes that technology alone is not enough: achieving the goal will require continuous reforms, improved regulation, and daily work on market development.
