Scammers devise new loan scheme: Georgians warned of "calls" from National Bank

Fraudsters impersonate employees of the National Bank of Georgia and try to gain access to online banking under the pretext of protecting accounts.

The National Bank of Georgia has reported a new wave of fraud, in which unknown individuals contact citizens via WhatsApp and other communication channels, posing as representatives of the regulator. To appear more convincing, the fraudsters use the NBG logo and offer assistance, allegedly with loan repayment or resolving issues with banking operations.

In one of the identified cases, scammers told a citizen that their banking data had allegedly been compromised and someone was trying to take out a loan in their name. To "verify the information," they asked the person to log into online banking or a mobile application and provide authorization data – login, password, and other financial information.

The National Bank warned that providing such data could lead to loss of access to accounts and the execution of illegal transactions. The regulator urged residents not to disclose personal information to unknown individuals, not to click on suspicious links, and to contact law enforcement agencies in case of such appeals.
