Georgia's transport sector demonstrated record performance in the first six months of 2026. According to the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of the country, growth was recorded in all key areas – from sea transportation to railway transit.
The volume of cargo handled in Georgia's seaports and terminals increased by 22% and reached 9.7 million tons – this is the maximum figure for the first half of the decade. The number of containers handled increased by 9%, to 409,397 TEU, which also became a record for the last ten years.
Growth was provided not only by traditional directions: new categories of cargo appeared in port statistics, including steel, pipes, gold and copper concentrates, as well as certain types of liquid bulk cargo. At the same time, the volume of transportation of other goods increased.
"Georgian Railway" also showed record results. From January to June 2026, the company transported 6.9 million tons of cargo, which is 10% more than last year's level and is the best result in the last ten years. In June, the railway also set a monthly record, handling 12,049 TEU of container cargo.
The Ministry of Economy of Georgia notes that positive dynamics are observed in all segments of transportation – import, export, transit, and domestic. In addition, the country's railway network continues to expand the list of transported products.
