Starting August 3, 2026, trains on the Tbilisi–Batumi route will cover the distance in approximately 4 hours instead of the current 5 hours. Georgian Railways is increasing train speeds and simultaneously implementing additional safety measures on certain sections, including the Guria region.
To monitor railway crossings, the company announced an urgent tender worth 107,380 GEL for the installation of a video surveillance system. As part of the project, 50 cameras will be installed at 25 crossings, transmitting real-time data to train drivers via special tablets. This will allow for quicker responses to potential dangerous situations.
Additionally, protective fences are being installed along the railway line in Guria to prevent people and animals from entering the tracks. For this project, 7,000 metal posts and an equal number of panels have already been purchased. The acceleration of movement between Tbilisi and Batumi is part of a large-scale modernization of the country's railway network, aimed at improving the speed and quality of passenger transportation.
