Tbilisi Plans to Launch Urban Railway with Access to Airport and Regions

The Tbilisi City Hall has begun preparing a feasibility study

At the initiative of the Tbilisi City Hall, in cooperation with "Georgian Railway," preparations have begun for a study on the creation of an urban railway corridor. An international tender has been announced for the selection of a contractor, in accordance with the procurement rules of the Asian Development Bank.

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced that the deadline for submitting applications is July 13. According to him, the project is based on the capital's sustainable mobility plan and involves the use of existing railway infrastructure.

This refers to the potential integration of the urban network with routes connecting Tbilisi to Mtskheta, Rustavi, the international airport, and eastern regions. If necessary, the construction of additional sections or bypass lines may also be considered.

At this stage, the project's objective is to conduct a comprehensive technical and economic analysis, assessing environmental, social, and financial factors. Based on the study's results, the optimal implementation model for the future transport corridor will be determined.

The City Hall notes that the project is part of the city's long-term transport strategy and is being implemented with the support of the Asian Development Bank. The coordination of works will be carried out by the Tbilisi Transport and Urban Development Agency.
