At a meeting, representatives of the Georgian Ministry of Economy and businesses discussed plans for developing the country's transit and logistics potential. Key topics included the construction of the Anaklia deep-water port, modernization of railway infrastructure, and coordination of transport projects with neighboring states.
Givi Chachanidze, Commercial Director of COSCO SHIPPING LINES, noted that the current transport infrastructure and the lack of a deep-water port remain limiting factors for strengthening Georgia's transit role in the region. According to him, the state is actively negotiating with Azerbaijan and Central Asian countries to synchronize logistics processes.
He emphasized that the development of the "Middle Corridor" faces congestion in the Caspian Sea, where the load on transportation is growing. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are already building new terminals and vessels, which should partially relieve the route and increase its capacity.
Special attention is paid to railway modernization: investments are directed towards updating locomotives and rolling stock, which should increase the efficiency of transportation within the country and on transit routes.
The Anaklia deep-water port project remains a key element of the strategy. According to the announced plans, the facility could receive its first vessel in 2029. If all infrastructure initiatives are implemented, Georgia will be able to strengthen its position as a logistics hub between Europe and Asia, and businesses are already expressing their readiness to participate in project development.
