Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced a significant reduction in electricity consumption in Mestia Municipality. According to him, preliminary measures to implement a metering system have already led to a decrease in energy consumption by approximately 35% compared to the same period last year.
During his annual address to parliament, he noted that the process of installing meters has begun in the region, which should make the system more transparent and orderly. The completion of these works is expected to allow for more accurate control over consumption and ensure fair billing for conscientious consumers.
Kobakhidze emphasized that previously, consumption figures in Mestia appeared abnormally high: given the population and scale of the municipality, annual consumption reached about 125 million kWh, which significantly exceeded expected levels. According to him, this indicated a systemic problem, including possible misuse of resources.
After the implementation of initial measures and increased control, authorities recorded a reduction in the load on the energy system. It is further expected that the full installation of meters will ultimately stabilize accounting and increase the transparency of energy consumption in the region.
