Georgia continues a large-scale renewal of its aviation infrastructure — authorities are simultaneously developing existing airports and preparing new sites for growing passenger traffic. According to the government program implementation report, work is underway in several directions at once, including the construction of a new international airport and the expansion of existing terminals.
One of the key projects remains the future Tbilisi airport based on the former military airfield in Vaziani, where design and research work is currently underway. In parallel, the existing capital airport is being expanded: terminal areas are being increased, new aircraft parking spaces and parking infrastructure are being created. After modernization, its capacity should grow from 5 to 10 million passengers per year.
Against the backdrop of these plans, steady traffic growth is recorded: in the first quarter of 2026, the country's airports served 1.6 million passengers, which is 4.28% more than a year earlier, and the number of flights increased by 8.7% — to 7,799. Regional hubs are also being developed: a new 3.5-kilometer runway is being built in Kutaisi, airport design is being completed in Telavi, and a new terminal is being prepared in Mestia. At the same time, new carriers are entering the market, including Norwegian Air Sweden and China Eastern Airlines, and Romanian DAN AIR plans to launch flights between Bucharest and Tbilisi as early as July.
