Drivers Prepared for a Surprise: Fines Sharply Increased from May 1

New rules tighten penalties for speeding, phone use, and even parking near hydrants

As of May 1, amendments to legislation developed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia came into force in Georgia. The main goal is to improve road safety amidst a growing number of vehicles and high accident rates. According to statistics, 469 people died in road accidents in 2025, and over 8,000 were injured.

The new rules provide for a significant increase in fines. For maneuvering violations, drivers will now have to pay 100 GEL and lose 20 points; exceeding the speed limit by 15–40 km/h will also cost 100 GEL. Not using a seatbelt and talking on the phone while driving will incur a 50 GEL fine each. Fines for illegal parking in large cities have been increased to 50 GEL.

New penalties have also appeared: for drifting with consequences – 500 GEL and license suspension for 6 months; for driving on the sidewalk – 200 GEL and minus 30 points. A fine for parking on sidewalks and crosswalks has been introduced – up to 100 GEL, as well as a new ban on stopping near fire hydrants with a sanction of 200 GEL and possible vehicle evacuation.
