Trade between Georgia and China soared 2.5 times after the launch of the free trade area

The parties are preparing an update to the agreement and an expansion of economic cooperation

After the free trade agreement entered into force, trade turnover between Georgia and China increased 2.5 times. This is evidenced by official statistical data reflecting the long-term growth of economic ties between the countries.

Georgia became the first country in the region to sign such an agreement with China back in 2017. The negotiations were completed in just seven months, and the agreement itself came into effect in 2018. Since then, trade volumes have grown steadily, with the exception of a separate downturn in 2023.

In 2025, trade turnover renewed its historical maximum, exceeding the 2017 figures by 2.5 times. A protocol on amendments to the current agreement is now being prepared for signing in Beijing. The details of the future amendments have not yet been disclosed, but Georgia's Minister of Economy Mariam Kvrivishvili is taking part in the negotiations.
