Poti Port Deepening May Cost Georgia Less Than Anaklia Construction

Dredging requires significantly less investment

Former Minister of Economy Giorgi Kobulia believes that deepening the port of Poti would be more effective for maintaining the competitiveness of the cargo corridor in Georgia than building the deep-sea port of Anaklia.

According to him, dredging requires significantly less investment and can be implemented mainly by the commercial sector, while the large-scale Anaklia project will be difficult to implement without state participation.

The Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor Association notes that 433 container trains passed through this route in 2025, and in the next 3-5 years, it is necessary to develop the existing infrastructure and implement digital solutions to increase cargo turnover.

Kobulia emphasizes that the Anaklia project is designed for cargo turnover volumes that the country is unlikely to reach in the near future, while deepening Poti will quickly increase throughput and strengthen the country's position in the transport market.
