Car importers and car dealers will hold a protest on February 21 near the Rustavi car market.
The reason was the government's decision to ban the import of cars older than 6 years, which the authorities explain by environmental considerations. The import of such cars will be allowed only for re-export.
The head of the Importers Association, Lasha Darbaiseli, called the decision a "direct shock" and a "general catastrophe." According to the organization's estimates, the ban could lead to the departure of at least 50% of importers from the market.
«This means unemployment and job losses. Not only car importers, but also people working in the car service sector and importing spare parts... Where will these people go?» Darbaiseli said.
