Georgia Buys Cars for Billions: Imports Hit Historic High

Almost $3.9 Billion in a Year and New Restrictions from April 2026

In 2025, imports of passenger cars into Georgia increased by 11.5% and reached a record $3.9 billion. The country imported 234,190 cars, and their share in the overall import structure approached 20%. According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia, passenger cars became the largest commodity item in foreign trade.

At the same time, re-exports also increased: 111,265 cars were sent abroad for $2.8 billion — plus 16% for the year. The main supplier remains the USA with a share of 58.9% and a volume of $2.2 billion. The top ten also include Germany, Japan, Turkey and China. A significant part of the cars is then shipped to Central Asian countries.

Imports of trucks, on the contrary, decreased by a third — to $151.4 million. At the same time, the market expects changes: from April 1, 2026, the country will ban the import and initial registration of passenger cars older than six years, with the exception of transit and re-export.
