JSC Georgian Railway has begun replacing rails on the 3-kilometer Kvishkheti–Khashuri section. The progress of the work was inspected on February 5 by the company’s General Director, Lasha Abashidze. According to him, after the modernization is completed, the maximum speed on this stretch will increase to 100 km/h, which will speed up both passenger and freight trains.
The work is planned to be completed before the start of the summer season. Up to 200 employees and heavy construction equipment are currently deployed at the site. The company emphasizes that the infrastructure upgrade is part of a larger program aimed not only at increasing train speeds, but also at improving comfort for passengers.
The Khashuri–Kvishkheti section is connected to the new Kvishkheti–Kharagauli–Zestafoni railway line, opened in December 2025. The cost of this project exceeded $270 million; as part of it, new tunnels were built, including the longest one at 8.3 km. Regular freight traffic has already begun on the new main line.
