Georgia sharply increased oil purchases from Russia: imports hit a 9-year record

Supplies grew more than 16-fold, with demand peaking in the autumn of 2025

In 2025, Georgia imported Russian oil for a record amount of $95.8 million. According to an analysis of customs statistics and the Comtrade database, shipment volumes increased more than 16-fold over the year, becoming the highest figure for the entire period of observation.

In physical terms, imports rose from 10.5 thousand tonnes in 2024 to 225.3 thousand tonnes by the end of 2025. For comparison, the previous maximum was recorded in 2016, when Georgia imported 39.6 thousand tonnes of oil from Russia worth $10.8 million, which now looks like a modest figure.

The most active month was October, when Georgian companies purchased 99 thousand tonnes of oil for $46.7 million. In December, volumes also remained high at 91.7 thousand tonnes worth $35.8 million. Thus, the main share of annual imports came in the final months of 2025, securing a new historical record.
