Georgia plans to close the existing Tbilisi International Airport immediately after the completion of the new air harbor in the suburb of Vaziani. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Economy Tamar Ioseliani. The new airport is designed to serve up to 20 million passengers, which is four times the capacity of the current facility, and is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2031.
The need to build a new airport is due to a significant increase in passenger traffic, which the current airport could no longer cope with. The decision on the project was made to expand infrastructure and improve the quality of service.
Currently, construction is delayed due to the lack of a government agreement with TAV Georgia, which manages the airports of Tbilisi and Batumi. The authorities are considering selling a stake in the new airport to investors, while the controlling stake will remain with the state.
