Georgia Suspends Land Communication with Russia

Tbilisi urgently stopped traffic due to a dangerous section in the mountains

Land communication between Georgia and Russia has been temporarily suspended. The Georgian authorities ordered a complete halt to traffic on the Georgian Military Road in both directions due to the sharply increased risk of avalanches. The decision was made to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers.

The greatest threat now lies in the mountainous section between the settlements of Gudauri and Kobi, which is 14 km long. This concerns the section from the 93rd to the 107th kilometer of the highway, where the avalanche danger has reached a critical level. There are no detour routes in this direction, so the closure has effectively led to a complete blockade of the land border between the two countries.

The road department of Georgia stated that traffic will be resumed only after the avalanche danger in the problem area decreases to zero. Specific dates for the opening of the road have not yet been announced, and the situation continues to be constantly monitored.
