Georgia moves to actively protect the environment and introduces a strict ban on disposable tableware

From 2026, knives, forks, straws, and tableware fall under the restrictions - the changes will also affect cafes with delivery service

In Georgia, from January 1, 2026, a ban came into force on the production, import, and sale of a number of types of disposable plastic tableware. The restrictions cover six items at once: plastic knives, forks, spoons, plates, cocktail straws, and sticks. The new rules apply not only to manufacturers and importers, but also to food service establishments.

Special attention has been given to food delivery services. Cafes and restaurants are prohibited from using disposable plastic containers and cups when handing ready-made dishes to consumers. The Ministry of Agriculture emphasizes that excessive plastic consumption remains one of the most acute environmental problems, and the country can no longer ignore the scale of pollution.

According to experts' estimates, about 612.5 million units of disposable plastic products are used annually in Georgia — from cups and lids to cutlery and straws. In terms of weight, this amounts to from 3.9 to 5.9 thousand tons of plastic per year. The fight against it began back in 2019, when a ban was introduced on polyethylene bags of any thickness, with the exception of biodegradable ones.
