The Georgian authorities have decided to completely renew the locomotive fleet of the Georgian Railway. It was decided to abandon the overhaul of machines that have outlived their usefulness: instead, the entire rolling stock of locomotives will be replaced with new models, which will be the largest project in the history of the national railway operator.
According to Lasha Abashidze, General Director of JSC "Georgian Railway", the company will purchase modern locomotives and form a completely updated fleet. According to him, the project is of strategic importance and is aimed at two goals at once — reducing travel time for passengers and increasing the attractiveness of the Georgian Railway within the Middle Corridor.
The renewal of rolling stock is considered a key task for the development of GR. Special attention is paid to difficult sections of routes, including pass zones, where new infrastructure has already been created as part of modernization projects.
The railway modernization process is nearing completion. It is expected that it will increase the network's capacity from 27 to 48 million tons of cargo per year, which will significantly strengthen the country's transit potential and Georgia's role in international transport routes.
